FC Barcelona Scored 8 Goals in a La Liga Match against These Teams
Founded in 1899, FC Barcelona is not only one of the most successful Spanish football clubs of all time but also one of the best in the world. The club clinched its inaugural La Liga domestic title in 1929 and has since accumulated a total of 27 titles, ranking second only to Real Madrid, which boasts 35 championships. Since its inception, Barcelona has scored nine or more goals in a La Liga match four times, including a record 10 goals against Gimnástico de Tarragona in September 1949.
While the club hasn’t reached the nine-goal mark in a La Liga contest in the 21st century, it has scored eight goals in a match five times since the 2010 season.
1. Huesca CD (September 2018)
Barcelona most recently reached the eight-goal mark in an 8–2 victory over Huesca CD in September 2018. Lionel Messi, the club’s all-time leading scorer with 672 goals and arguably one of the greatest footballers of all time, scored two goals in the match, as did Luis Suarez, Barcelona’s third all-time leading scorer with 195 goals. Messi also had a pair of assists in the match and could have scored a third goal on a late injury-time penalty, but he let Suarez take the shot instead.
Barcelona’s lopsided victory wasn’t much of a surprise. The club had previously beaten Huesca 8–1 in the 2014–15 Copa del Rey and Huesca was participating in its first top-flight season. Huesca finished the season in second-last place with a win-draw-loss record of 7–12–19 and was relegated to the Segunda División.
2. Deportivo La Coruna (April 2016)
Near the end of the 2015–16 season on Matchday 34, Barcelona shut out Deportivo La Coruna 8–0 in front of a crowd of nearly 29,000 people at Abanca-Riazor, Deportivo’s home stadium. Barcelona, which was top of the table at the time of the victory, maintained that position until the end of the season, winning its second consecutive title and 24th all-time. Deportivo was in 14th place at the time and finished the season in 15th place.
Surprisingly, Messi scored just one goal in the match, while Suarez scored four, all of which came within the first 64 minutes of the match. Suarez, who finished with a league-leading 40 goals and tied Messi for the most assists with 16, also had three assists in the 8–0 rout. In doing so, he became the first La Liga player in the 21st century to be involved in seven goals in a single match. It was also his sixth hat trick of the season. He had two more hat tricks in the final four matches of the campaign.
Barcelona is 63–20–22 all-time in 105 matches against Deportivo.
3. Córdoba (May 2015)
Messi and Suarez played an integral role in another lopsided 8–0 Barcelona victory, this time over Córdoba CF on Matchday 35 at Nuevo Arcángel in May 2015. Suarez, in his first season with the club since arriving at Camp Nou on a transfer from Liverpool, scored his first hat trick of the year, while Messi added a pair of goals in the match. Ivan Rakitic, Gerard Pique, and Neymar also found the back of the net.
With the victory, Barcelona remained two points ahead of rival Real Madrid for the league title. The club held onto that advantage to secure its 23rd La Liga title. Córdoba finished in last place and was relegated to the Segunda División.
4. Osasuna (September 2011)
From March 2010 to January 2012, Barcelona beat CA Osasuna in five consecutive matches by a combined score of 19–0. The most lopsided of those victories was an 8–0 win on Matchday 4 in the 2011–12 La Liga season. Messi scored one of his 36 career La Liga hat tricks in the match and added a pair of assists. David Villa scored twice and Xavi and Cesc Fàbregas also scored. Osasuna player Rovérsio contributed an own goal.
Barcelona, the three-time defending La Liga champions, finished runner-up to Real Madrid in the 2011–12 season. Osasuna finished in seventh place with a record of 13–15–10. Following Matchday 4 in the 2023–24 season, Barcelona has a record of 56–19–20 against Osasuna and has outscored the team 214–85. Osasuna only has six wins over Barcelona in the 21st century and last beat the club 2–1 in the 2019–20 La Liga season.
5. UD Almería (November 2010)
Barcelona scored eight goals for the first time in a La Liga match in the 21st century in an 8–0 victory over UD Almería on Matchday 12 of the 2010–11 season. The club last reached the eight-goal mark in a La Liga match in the 1996–97 season against CD Logroñés.
Unsurprisingly, Messi scored a hat trick in the match, while Bojan Krkic added a pair of goals. Andrés Iniesta and Pedro also scored. Almería player Santiago Acasiete contributed an own goal. Barcelona is 13–2–1 in 16 matches against Almería and has outscored the team 47–8.
